whose spaces / breaking defaults tells stories of sociocultural realities with the use of photography and text. The interdisciplinary research project shows people who defy the heteronormative structures of society and claim their place in communities of the urban space.
Delving into the intricacies of urban dynamics, the project want to shed light on the shifting paradigms within communities and their spatial interactions. Implicitly tied to heteronormative societal constructs, these communities echo both patriarchal norms and overlooked disparities.
Central to this endeavor is the scrutiny of prevailing gender dynamics in urban settings. With a lens on female, queer identities, the inquiry navigates the nuanced experiences within predominantly male-dominated spaces. The project is an exploration of community identity and its personal significance. To accomplish this, a combination of phototgraphy and interviews is employed to explore the dynamics of communities, with a focus on the music industry in New York and Germany.
The project seeks to unravel the complex interplay between spaces, societal norms, and individual identities, trying to make a contribution to a more diverse and inclusive environment.
What defines female and queer identity in male-dominated spaces and what meaning members ascribe to their community is addressed in the work through photographs and conducted interviews.
The photographs are also, but not exclusively, documentary. They show interpersonal relationships and moments, sometimes in an abstract and poetic way. Both with and without the text passages taken from the interviews, they communicate a togetherness among like-minded people who work together to make communities more solidary and inclusive.
